Emergent functions of electrically induced bubbles in micro/nano-scale fluid engineering for biomedical applications

Cell poration technologies are valuable for molecular studies and genetic manipulation, yet delivering very large molecules remains difficult. We present a novel electromechanical poration method using a core–shell microbubble generator, which concentrates electric fields to produce bubbles that stimulate cells. This enables transfection of molecules in the thousands of kilodaltons into hard-to-manipulate cells such as osteoblasts and Chlamydomonas. Adjusting suspension viscosity further enhances efficiency, likely via cytoskeletal remodeling. The method’s broad applicability offers new opportunities in gene engineering.
